Welcome To Time To Train Your Dog
My name is Angel Colbert. I was certified as a pet dog trainer by PetSmart in 2005. After that I read more books on general dog training, clicker training, dog aggression, separation anxiety, behavior problem solving, researching different dog breeds, puppy specific issues, and service dog training.
I love dogs. Even their little quirks and stubbornness. I used to run my own dog training business until a disability got too difficult to continue. To compensate I trained my own psychiatric service dog. Now I blog about dog training and other dog related topics.
I also have a considerable amount of experience in animal rescue. All of my dogs are rescue babies. Although I didn’t work with a particular rescue, for years, mostly in Kentucky, it seemed like dogs that needed help found me. I found no kill rescues for them that had the space and time to take care of them. Now that I have the space and ability to help re-home a dog, it seems that the dogs no longer find me.
Like all people I have my “issues.” I believe that every dog deserves to be treated well. By that I mean trained, fed with good quality (not necessarily expensive food), exercised, and treated like a member of the family.
My biggest problem with some folks is that they treat dogs like they are toys or can be thrown away. I believe that when you buy or adopt a dog you make a commitment to care for that animal. That can mean you caring for them, or if you can’t, and we all know life happens, finding that animal a home where it will be cared for appropriately.
If you can’t care for your dog yourself, and you can’t find someone to take your dog, go to www.petfinder.com and find a no-kill rescue that can give your pet a second chance at life.
Although I respect humane societies and animal shelters, they are overworked, overcrowded, and euthanize animals if they can’t be adopted in a relatively short amount of time.
So, I’m making this blog. I’m trying to add the information that allows even people who can’t afford training classes can train their dog. I hope it helps you. Feel free to comment if there is something you’d like to see that isn’t here yet. I’ll add it, or research it as soon as possible.
Eventually I’d like to move south to be nearer to family and open my dog training business again and enjoy everyone else’s dogs as well as my own. I’m currently in the Kentucky with my wonderful beagle, Karma.
Thanks for visiting,
Angel

I’ve been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever… Darcey Hannigan

Hi Angel,
My name is Lisa and I too have a great passion for the four-legged. I enjoy your blog and appreciate all the information. I have been wanting to train dogs but I can’t seem to find the right place to learn. I volunteer at the shelter and also blog about my rescues and the experiences I’ve had at http://www.tailsfromthefur.wordpress.com but I want to do more. Do you have any suggestions as to where I should go or how I should go about getting the training for myself. I can’t tell you how many books I’ve read.
Thanks and keep up the good work.

You can start by reading “So You Want To Be A Dog Trainer” by Nicole Wilde. It gives you a picture of what life as a dog trainer is really like, sample forms, business advice for when you are ready, etc. If you want experience while you are learning volunteer at your humane society. I don’t think they will turn you away. To learn to be a dog trainer I read every book on positive reinforcement training I could get my hands on. I also got a job as a dog trainer at Petsmart and they have an excellent and comprehensive (and a little exhausting if you do it right) training program for their trainer’s program. There are schools, but there will be links to most of those in the Nicole Wilde book. If you need help researching them let me know. BTW, even though I don’t give instructions on it, clicker training is very effective and Karen Pryor is the expert in the field. I simply find it impossible to give instructions on it when I am writing on my blog. It’s not a fad, so whether your school or job trains you or not, learn about it. It gives you an extra tool for working with obedience. Your start is the Nicole Wilde book. I’d get Version 2 so you get the latest resources. I’m getting ready to replace my copy. It got lost in a move. If you have questions let me know. You can also email me at angel.colbert@yahoo.com.
