No matter how significant or complex the behavior you want to teach your dog you need him to respond to you the first time, every time. If they don’t, then they aren’t fully trained yet. Luckily, this is easy enough to remedy.
First, you have to add a new rule for training your dog.
Never Repeat a Command Twice.
This is a hard habit to break. You need to break it. It is very important for your dog to respond to safety commands like stay, leave it, and come.
Now to get on to how to stop your dog from having you repeat commands.
- Ask your dog to do something easy. Ask only once.
- If he responds the first time reward him.
- If he doesn’t respond lure him into the correct position.
- Next give him his treat.
This is a process that you can incorporate into your training from here on out. If your dog doesn’t respond the first time lure him into position then reward him.
Keep practicing with your dog. You can do it!
