Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953

A dog behaviorist or pet behaviorist is not a dog trainer.  A dog trainer is qualified to teach your dog obedience commands and in some cases, very mild cases of aggression and separation anxiety.  Some dog trainers are only qualified to teach obedience commands.  Ask about their experience with your specific behavior issues.

A dog behaviorist is a specialist.  They may or may not also be able to train your dog in obedience commands.  They are the most qualified to deal with issues like severe separation anxiety and aggression other behavior issues.

A dog behaviorist can help with these problems when a qualified dog trainer can’t.  They should be certified by a Dog Behaviorist Association.  It’s even better if they are also a Vet.  Then they would also be qualified to write prescriptions if your dog needs to be medicated.

Of course you will need to get references and ask questions about their experience with your specific problems.  Ask about their education and whether they are required to do continuing education.

If you have other questions about dog behaviorists, leave me a comment and I’ll be happy to help any way I can.
