Doing a time out, crate training

When you select the best crate for your dog, after you decide whether you want a wire crate or a plastic one, you need to choose the correct size.  You need to choose the size based on your dog’s size now.  If you go with a plastic crate you may have to buy another crate as your dog grows.  Wire crates sometimes come with dividers that allow you to buy the size of crate for your dog at his adult size and then section it off to give your dog the room he needs right now for crate training.

You want to make sure that your dog will be comfortable when crated.  To do that:

  • The crate must be tall enough to allow your dog to stand at his full height without ducking his head.
  • It must be wide enough to allow your dog to lie on his side and stretch out
  • It must be long enough for him to lie dow stretched to his full body length without having to curl up.

If you buy a crate that is too big, the puppy will learn to sleep in one end and eliminate in the other, defeating the purpose of using the crate.  If you have questions or comments, let me know and I’ll try to address your concerns.
