How often should I take my pet to the vet?

Puppies need a series of shots that we will venture into, in another post.  For these shots, you should consult your vet and follow his instructions.  After your dog is an adult, annual or semi-annual visits are required.  You should also make a trip to your vet as soon as you get your dog.

Where is the best place to buy a new pet?

There are adoption centers in pet stores.  There are also local shelters and humane societies with hundreds of pets – just waiting for you.  There are even purebred rescues.  You can get a list of most local rescue groups at www.petfinder.com.

Is Spaying or Neutering Necessary?

YES!  There are millions of homeless pets just waiting to be adopted.  Unplanned breeding adds to that number.  Plus, altered pets tend to be less susceptible to certain cancers and illnesses.

What Toys Are Safe to Leave Alone With Pets?

Safety first.  Never leave an interactive toy (such as latex or plush toys) with dogs until you know their chewing tendencies.  It’s best to only leave heavy rubber toys such as Kongs or Goodie Ships when you can’t supervise.  These toys can’t be destroyed or ingested by most pets.
